As we leave 5786 behind and step into 5787, we take this moment to reflect on the year that has passed and to look forward to the opportunities the new year will bring. In the spirit of the season, we ask forgiveness from those we may have wronged, and we offer forgiveness in turn, so that we may begin 5787 with a clean slate.

5786 was the year Israel finally struck at the source of the threat, taking the fight directly to the Iranian regime that has spent decades funding and directing terror against Israel and across the region. Iran emerges from this year weakened and diminished. Edmund Burke said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Good men finally stood up to the evil Iranian regime.

Here in our own community, we have also seen many good men and women standing up for what is right. Standing up for Israel and the Jewish people against a tide of hate and lies spread by those who march under Iranian regime flags alongside Hamas and Hezbollah flags. We take this opportunity to thank you, our community, for your strength and moral clarity in standing with Israel.

With Israel heading into national elections, and all the uncertainty that entails, we hope that whoever is elected will lead the country with strength, honesty, and a willingness to do what is necessary for Israel to continue going from strength to strength. Many challenges lie ahead, from completing the task against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, to addressing the many matters facing Israel at home.

Shana Tova U'Metuka, wishing you and your family a sweet and meaningful new year.

In the year ahead, the SAZF Cape Council will continue to build on the foundation laid over the past few years. We will continue to grow, nurture relationships across our community, and stand proud and firm for our community, for Israel and for Zionism.
